Tax Consulting South Africa in collaboration with the South African Institute of Tax (SAIT) will once again host a Pre-Indaba webinar, which serves as an appetiser event ahead of SAIT’s 10^th Annual Tax Indaba in September. This event is virtual and is free to attend on Zoom and will be on the morning of 17 August 2023. This Pre-Indaba focuses on the area of tax, including its wider repercussions, which has undergone the most change in the past 6 months. A good grasp of these topics ensures that you remain fully updated on the latest developments and ever-changing client requirements.

The topic this year is Offshore and South African Trust Reporting, Wealth Movement and Family Business Considerations. There has been unprecedented change for anyone dealing with trusts and moving money abroad. The compliance and regulatory framework has completely changed with the new SARS AIT Process, New Trust Reporting at the Masters’ Office, and CIPC and Trust Tax Return requirements. Anyone who has completed the new South African trust tax return or undertaken this process will understand the level of complexity required to ensure trust tax compliance.

Jerry Botha – Managing Partner at Tax Consulting SA

Jerry has over 20 years’ experience in the field of taxation, holds his own FSCA License, is a Master Reward Practitioner and serves on the Executive Board of the South African Reward Association (“SARA”), Chairs the SARA Employee Benefit Committee, and is a Certified Payroll Practitioner and Tax Practitioner. He is the managing partner of South Africa’s largest independent tax practice, enjoys presenting and is passionate about tax and international individuals. He has also authored the Lexis Nexis “Expatriate Tax” textbook, as critically acclaimed by Judge Dennis Davis.

Keith Engel – CEO of SAIT

Keith is the Chief Executive Officer for the South African Institute of Taxation. As part of his core duties managing the Institute, he is heavily engaged in tax at a policy, legislative and interpretative level (e.g. with National Treasury, Parliament, SARS, the Davis Tax Committee and the private sector). His role also includes presentations and participation in a wide range of South African tax and regional African tax issues for technical audiences and is repeatedly engaging with the media. Outside of the Institute, he regularly teaches at the Wits University as an adjunct professor and provides lectures at other universities. Keith is well known for his leading roles in the formulation of tax legislation at the National Treasury from 2000 to 2013.

Keith Engel has engaged in a broad range of tax issues with a special emphasis on international and transactional tax. In more recent days, he has been focusing more heavily on individual wealth issues at both a domestic and cross-border level. He has a good grasp of residency and domicile issues involving South Africa, the United States and the United Kingdom. Many of his seminars relating to local and offshore trusts.

Jashwin Baijoo – Head of Strategic Engagement & Compliance

Jashwin Baijoo holds both an LLB and LLM degree, specialising in International Tax and Business Law. Jashwin has 6 years of legal experience in various aspects of South African and international law.

He is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa with both practical litigation and consulting experience. He has worked in law firms focusing on dealing with litigation and commercial disputes.

Jashwin moved from the pure practice of law to the consulting industry and has entrenched himself within tax law, specifically dealing with the elements of cross-border taxation, corporate incorporations and compliance, and international regulatory applications.

Ashley Clüver – Africorp Treasury Manager

Ashley is the Manager of Africorp Treasury and has 8 years’ experience in the insurance industry and foreign exchange market. She is a current student with the South African Institute of Financial Markets. Ashley is passionate about forex and has a deep understanding of both individual and corporate client’s currency needs and risk appetites. Her aim is to assist in navigating the daunting world of currency conversation and exchange control compliance.

Amanda Smit – Henley & Partners

Amanda Smit is the Managing Partner at Henley & Partners South Africa. Based in Cape Town, she is responsible for operations in South Africa and expanding into Africa. Her responsibilities include working extensively with direct clients interested in residence and citizenship programs and ensuring diligent processing of client applications within the set regulations. Amanda has extensive knowledge of residence and citizenship acquisition processes within these markets and provides clients with a seamless service supported by her solid legal background. As a South African national with dual British citizenship, she understands the restraints of a limiting passport and the benefits of being a global citizen. Amanda is a member of the Investment Migration Council.

Aditi Boolell

Reckoning several years of consulting and advisory experience, Aditi holds an LLB(Hons) degree from King’s College of London and joined the graduate programme at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Mauritius gaining exposure in audit, tax & legal services and with the global fund. She has acquired expertise in immigration advisory work, assisting expatriates in moving to Mauritius, setting up their own businesses, acquiring property in Mauritius, applying for work, residence, occupation, permanent residence permits or lodging citizenship applications.

Micaela Paschini – Tax Attorney

Micaela Paschini is an Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa and part of the legal team at Tax Consulting SA. Holding an LLB degree from the University of Pretoria, she has spent several years practising and specialising in the fields of trusts and deceased estates and possesses extensive knowledge within these areas. When she is not assisting her clients with all things tax related, she is completing her Masters in Tax Law through the University of Pretoria. Her commitment to excellence contributes to her remarkable performance as an Attorney in the field.

Natasha Singh – Director at SARS High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI)

A chartered accountant with more than 20 years’ experience, as Director: High Wealth Individual (HWI) Segment. Commissioner Kieswetter introduced Ms Singh to colleagues and staff at the Woodmead offices where the new unit will be co-located with the Large Business & International (LB&I) Segment. Ms Singh holds a Master’s degree specializing in taxation. She joins SARS from Eskom where she served as Finance Executive: Group Insurance and Tax.

Darren Britz – Head of Tax Legal at Tax Consulting SA

Darren holds a BA Law and LLB degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and is an Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa, specialising in employee mobility and tax administration. He heads up the tax legal, consisting of tax attorneys and associates with their own expertise. Darren’s experience includes advising companies across a broad range of industries on their payroll tax and international tax consequences. He is also a leading expert in advising clients in their expansion into Africa.
